Time for a Filter Refresh? Here’s Why Glass is the Clear Winner

After a few busy summers (and years) of swimming, your filter’s been working hard to keep your water clear. Best practice is to change your media every 5 years on average, if your pool is in a dusty environment, you may need to do it more frequently. Conversely, if you have an indoor pool you may be able to stretch it out a year or two. There are three tips to indicate it might be time:

  • After backwashing, if the pressure on your gauge increases by 10-15 kpa within a week or two
  • If you have poor water flow, which improves after a backwash or on recirculate
  • If your water isn’t looking quite as sparkling as it used to

Upgrading to glass media is the smartest choice.

Here’s why more of our customers are making the switch from sand to glass.

What Is Filter Media?

Filter media is the material inside your filter that traps bacteria, fine particles and dirt, dust, and debris as water flows through it. It’s what keeps your pool clear.

Traditional pool filters use sand, but now, crushed recycled glass is becoming the most popular and effective upgrade – and for good reason.

The Benefits of Glass Media

  • Clearer Water – Glass has a more angular shape than sand, which means it compacts to capture finer particles – tiny bits of debris and oils that sand might miss. That means cleaner, clearer water with less effort.
  • Less Maintenance – Oils and grease from sunscreen, body lotions and general pool use stick to sand over time, making it clump together reducing its effectiveness. Glass, on the other hand, is non-porous and much less likely to trap oils. It also resists clumping, so you’ll spend less time backwashing and cleaning.
  • Water & Energy Savings – Because glass backwashes faster and more efficiently, you’ll use less water during cleaning. Plus, your filter doesn’t have to work as hard to push water through clean media, which improves water flow for longer between each backwash cycle.

When Should You Change Your Filter Media?

If your pool water looks dull, cloudy, or you find you’re having to backwash your filter more often than usual, it might be time for a change.
