NON-CHLORINE SHOCK: The Ultimate Must-Have For Your Spa Routine

Keeping your spa water clean doesn’t always mean loading it up with sanitiser. One of the most useful and misunderstood products in spa care is non-chlorine shock, also known as oxidising shock. It’s a simple way to freshen up your water, reduce odours and help your sanitiser do its job properly without boosting your sanitiser levels.
What Is Non-Chlorine Shock?
Non-chlorine shock is an oxidiser that helps “burn off” the organic contaminants that build up in spa water like sweat, oils, cosmetics, sunscreen and body lotions. Because spas are small and primarily heated, these contaminants build up much faster compared to swimming pools. When this happens, your spa water can appear dull, smell of chemicals, and become harder to balance. Non-chlorine shock gives your water a refresh without raising your sanitiser level.
Ultimately, non-chlorine shock:
- Breaks down organic waste that can make your water cloudy
- Reduces unwanted spa odours
- Restores your sanitiser’s strength as sanitiser becomes less effective when overloaded with waste
- Helps water look clearer by improving filtration
- Minimises foaming caused by oils, sweat, cosmetics, and detergents brought in by bathers
When Should You Use Non-Chlorine Shock?
We reccomend going in with a dose after each use, but some situations call for an extra dose. As a general guide, this product is best used:
- After each use (especially after a heavy bather load)
- Before an expected heavy use
- After an initial fill if chlorine is not your primary sanitiser or you fill from tank water
- If your water is developing an ‘off’ smell or smells strongly of your spa sanitiser
Using non-chlorine shock regularly makes all other aspects of spa care (sanitiser, balancing and filtration) much easier.
Why You Still Need a Sanitiser
Even though non-chlorine shock keeps water clean, it doesn’t kill bacteria- it clears out waste allowing your sanitiser to do the disinfecting properly. Unlike sanitiser’s, non-chlorine shock works to oxidise their byproducts (the ‘dead’ sanitiser left over after it reacts with bacteria). Non-chlorine shock supports them, it doesn’t replace them. This is why a primary sanitiser such as bromine or chlorine is still essential.
NOTE: OXIDISING SHOCKS ARE SUITABLE FOR ALL TYPES OF SANITISERS INCLUDING CHLORINE, BROMINE, BIGUANIDE, POPPITS & PEROXSIL SPAS.
How to Use Non-Chlorine Shock
- Pool Pro’s ‘Spa Shock’ has a reccomended dosage rate of 15g per 1,000L of water (maintenance dose) and should be used in the evening or morning when there are no bathers in the spa. Simply broadcast the required amount into the middle of the spa with the filter running. Wait at least 15 minutes before allowing people into the spa.

- Poppits’ ‘Quick Fix’ Chlorine Free Oxidiser has a reccomended dosage rate of 30g per 1,000L of water for a maintenance dose. The product should also be broadcasted into the middle of the spa, making sure to run the filter and pumps for 4 hours after. Bathers should wait 30 minutes before re-entering the pool after using the treatment.

NOTE: POPPITS’ ‘QUICK FIX’ CAN NOT BE USED IN CHLORINE OR BROMINE SANITISED SPAS. IN THIS CASE, USE POOL PRO’S ‘SPA SHOCK’

Non-chlorine shock is one of the easiest ways to keep your spa water clear, fresh, and easy to manage. It helps your sanitiser work properly, reduces odours, and prevents water from becoming cloudy between uses. Used after each soak, it becomes a simple part of routine spa maintenance that can make all the differnece to your water quality.
