Pool Stain Removal

Pool staining is not only unsightly, it can also be the result of an ongoing issue that is relatively easy to avoid if regular testing and balancing is maintained.

Pool stains are common on all pool surfaces, and present in different colours based on the cause of the stain. Green or brown stains usually come from leaves, algae on the pool surface or contaminants in your water source if you use bore water.

If your pool has a gas heater a low PH and high chlorine levels can degrade the heat exchanger and cause copper stains which are often black but can also be purple or turquoise. Use of cheaper grade pool salt, prolonged use of liquid chlorine can cause iron staining which is usually yellow to brown stains.

Understanding the cause and type of stain helps determine the best treatment option. Generally speaking, we classify stains as either Organic or Inorganic – organic stains are caused by leaves & other such debris or algae and inorganic stains are mostly metals such as copper and iron. Organic stains are often removed with chlorine-based stain treatments and inorganic stains respond well to acid based treatments.

This particular pool stain was most likely caused by excessive copper levels from a pool ioniser which uses copper and silver to supplement the chlorine sanitiser. The treatment took place over a few visits and we were able to remove the black stains from the pool with relative ease without damaging the surface and leave the pool looking its best once again.

Having us select the right stain treatment for you pool can remove them from your pool and we can provide help to stop them from coming back.
