Green Pool Clean Up

How to clean up a Green Pool? This was one of our recent green pool treatments (June 2023)

Of all the green pools we clean this one was one of the easier ones. While it had been idle for more than a few months, the owner was lucky as there was not much leaf litter at the bottom and the algae had not formed significantly on the walls.

Working through our green pool process we scooped and brushed the pool and proceeded to top it up and test the water before chemically treating it with our go-to mix of liquid chlorine, Copper Free Algaecide and pool flocculant (see the photos of the products we used at the bottom of this article).

As the pH was high, we chose powdered floc as this works best at a higher pH. The pool was left running on recirculate for a couple of hours for the chemicals to mix then it was shut off and left to settle before we returned a couple of days later.

A flocculant works differently from a clarifier in that a clarifier coagulates particles in the water so they become larger and are more readily trapped in the filter, thus speeding up the clarification time. A floc on the other hand goes further and creates almost a gelatinous mass that is too heavy to stay suspended in the water so it drops to the pool floor where it can be vacuumed to waste.

*Floc’s performance depends on water balance parameters, particularly pH and Alkalinity, which both need to be on the higher side for it to work efficiently.

The floc had worked its magic, and, while the pool wasn’t completely clear it had settled and cleared sufficiently for us to vacuum to waste. We then topped up the pool water level and checked the water balance again.

We added more chlorine (as chlorine is used up rapidly during a green pool cleanup) and our Supershine clarifier. This time we left the pool running in filter mode.

Supershine is a double-action clarifier best used when the pool is very cloudy and it is hard to make out the bottom of the pool.

On arrival a few days later, the pool was clear and we vacuumed the remaining sediment to waste and rebalanced the pool water ready for a swim!

From start to finish it took 8 days, this would have been shorter if we were able to attend every day.
