Laser-Cut Pool Blanket Installation: A Clever Solution for a Tricky Pool Shape

At My Pool Shop Melbourne, we pride ourselves on helping customers get the most out of their pools, and sometimes that means finding smart solutions for challenges that don’t have a straightforward fix.
One of our recent jobs involved installing a new pool blanket on an odd-shaped pool. We have covered many traditional kidney-shaped pools but they usually have a straigt edge down one side, its rare that pools don’t have a straight edge at all, as was the case with this figure 8 style pool!
Normally, cutting a pool blanket to suit this kind of shape takes a lot of time, patience, and careful trimming around the pool’s curves. But for this install, we tried something a little different and it turned out brilliantly.
The Mission: A Perfect Fit
Our customer needed a high-quality pool blanket that would fit their uniquely shaped pool and be easy to roll up. Traditional trimming requires a technician to walk the entire perimeter of the pool, cutting bit by bit until the blanket fits the shape correctly. It’s time-consuming work, and not always easy around curves and tight areas. Trimming an odd shaped pool blanket often results in quite a bit of wastage as the blanket is supplied as a rectangle and then cut to shape onsite. Also, they can be hard to roll up as the wider section is forced through the narrow gap.
Taking the Stress Out of Odd-Shaped Pools
If you’ve ever had to maintain a pool with a non-standard shape, we know it can sometimes feel like nothing off-the-shelf ever fits quite right. Odd shapes add character and charm to a backyard, but they can also add a little frustration when it comes to things like getting the right cover. We get it. Our customer wanted a blanket that looked tidy, fit the pool shape and did its job properly and was easy to roll up. That’s why we were excited to use a solution that delivered precision, saved time, and made the removal and refitting much easier.
Our Solution: Laser-Cut Accuracy
For this job we employed a laser-cut pool blanket service. The pool was measured using a specialised 3D process designed to capture the exact shape of complex, curved pools. Our service technicians placed markers around the pool, took some reference measurements and captured a series of photos from different angles. These images were then used to create a precise 3D pattern of the pool’s outline as shown below, allowing the blanket to be precisely cut to size in the factory.

The result was a perfectly contoured blanket that fit the shape without the need for time-consuming cutting on site. Overall, this method cut on-site labour by around 1-2 hours. Aside from dropping the pool blanket into place, the only thing left to do was assemble the roller and attach the connections. No guesswork. No trimming. No wasted time.
The installation itself was smooth and efficient. The new blanket dropped neatly into place, fitting the curves of the pool beautifully. Photos from the job show just how clean and precise the final shape is.

The End Result
To make rolling up a breeze, this blanket was manufactured with a stitched seam designed for easy folding. This also meant the customer could use a shorter roller which reduced cost and makes it much easier to move around the pool deck once the blanket is rolled up. The stitched seam also makes the blanket easy to handle and more durable than the simple folded seams found on traditional covers. The end result is a cleaner, tidier look with more usable space on the pool deck, a win for both aesthetics and practicality.
Thanks to the precise factory cutting, the blanket fits perfectly, helping it hold heat more efficiently and keep out leaves and debris. Additionally, it’s easy to use and the customer saved both time and labour costs. The result? A tidy, efficient, great-looking pool blanket.
Our Verdict
After trialling this method, our team agrees it’s a fantastic option for most non-rectangular pools. For pools with only slight curves or a single curved edge, we may still hand-cut the blanket on site, but we can already see ourselves relying on this approach far more often.
Every pool is unique, and that’s why we’re always looking for solutions that suit your pool’s unique shape and your lifestyle. This laser-cut blanket installation is a great example of how the right tools and services can make all the difference.
