How to Clear Cloudy Pool Water FAST!

To clear cloudy pool water there are a few things that you need to ensure. Water balance, water flow, filtration & clarifying. When all of these are done, your water will be back to sparkling clear in no time!
1. Get your water balance right, in particular, the chlorine & pH
Cloudy pool water is usually the result of fine particles of dead algae, organic material and swimmer waste, sunscreens, etc.
To remove these from your water you’ll need to first get your water balance right, we always suggest bringing in a water sample to the shop for analysis. This way you’ll get the most accurate reading and know the exact amounts of chemicals to use to rebalance. Ensuring your chlorine and pH are within the ideal ranges is the most important.
2. Either backwash & rinse the filter or clean the cartridge element
A clean filter will increase the amount of material that can be filtered and increase your water flow, getting more water through your filter. If your filter is already dirty, clearing will take longer and you’ll most likely have to clean it soon anyway!
3. Add a clarifier
Adding a clarifier will bind the finer particles together to help the filter pick them up the first time around, which speeds up the process!
4. for 24-48 hours
By running your filter continuously for 24 hours, you’ll be able to ‘turn over’ your pool water 3 or even 4 times!
5. Vacuum to waste if necessary
If you have residue on the bottom of the pool, you may need to vacuum to waste. This requires the pool to be topped up with water and hand vacuumed to waste slowly so as not to disturb the sediment. It’s best to hand vacuum if you can as auto cleaners can stir up the sediment and recirculate it making the water murky again and essentially hindering the process.
Once your water is clear, return your filtration times back to normal, test your water again and re-balance if necessary, then you’re good to go swimming!
BONUS TIP!
An average pool (45,000 ltrs) should run for 6-8 hours per day in the summer, and 4 hours per day in winter (as little as 2 hrs/day if you Winterise or have a pool cover). This continuous water filtration will remove debris, contaminants, and other impurities from the water.
Swapping your sand filtration media for glass media will filter your water much more finely than sand.
In conjunction with keeping your water balanced, and checking that your phosphates aren’t too high, a regular dose of a clarifier will ensure you have crystal-clear water all the time.
