Astral Halo Chlorinator Installation for Improved Pool Performance

Regular pool servicing is about more than keeping the water looking clean. Every visit is also an opportunity to assess the condition of the equipment and identify small issues before they become expensive problems.
In this case, ongoing monitoring during routine maintenance helped us identify a chlorinator that was no longer producing chlorine, allowing us to recommend a solution before the pool developed a serious algae problem.
The Situation
During our regular four weekly pool service, we noticed that the chlorine levels had remained consistently lower than expected over several visits. The pool had also started to become cloudy, which is often an early sign that sanitising is no longer keeping up with demand. Left unresolved, it was only a matter of time before the water quality deteriorated further and the pool turned green.
As part of every service we inspect the pool equipment for signs of wear or developing faults. This helps us identify potential problems before they affect the pool’s water quality or lead to equipment failure.
During this inspection, we noticed the existing Zodiac chlorinator was displaying a low salt warning.
Understanding the Challenge
A low salt warning does not always mean there is insufficient salt in the water. After testing, we confirmed that the salt level was within the correct operating range. Low salt warnings can also indicate a dirty or ageing chlorinator cell, or in some cases, colder water temperatures affecting the unit’s operation.
To rule out the simpler possibilities, we cleaned the chlorinator cell, increased the chlorine output and carried out a visual inspection of the electrodes, paying particular attention to the centre plate for signs of corrosion like in the below image. The center plate is heavily corroded this is normal wear and happens over time. It is a good indicator the cell needs replacing.

Our Approach
Unfortunately the chlorinator continued to struggle to maintain adequate chlorine production. Rather than recommending an immediate replacement, we discussed both repair and replacement options with the pool owner. Replacing the electrode was possible, but considering the age of the chlorinator itself, it would have addressed only one part of an ageing system.
We explained that replacing the complete chlorinator would provide a more reliable long term solution and reduce the likelihood of further issues developing with older components. During this discussion, the pool owner also expressed interest in being able to control the pool heater remotely, something the existing equipment could not support.
The Astral Halo chlorinator offered an ideal solution because it could connect directly with the existing compatible pool heater. This allowed heater control through the Halo system without requiring additional automation hardware. It also provides a pathway for future upgrades, including automation of pool lighting and valves if required.

Installation and Setup
We removed the existing Zodiac chlorinator and installed a new Astral Halo chlorinator. Once the unit was in place, we completed the electrical and plumbing connections before configuring the system.
The compatible pool heater was then integrated with the Halo chlorinator, allowing it to be controlled remotely making the old control panel redundant.
After installation, we tested the system to confirm it was operating correctly and producing chlorine as intended.

The Outcome
Replacing the ageing chlorinator with an Astral Halo chlorinator restored reliable chlorine production before the pool’s water quality deteriorated further. With consistent sanitising performance returned, the pool was back on track to maintaining clear and healthy water.
The upgrade also provided a modern control platform that improved everyday convenience. By integrating the compatible pool heater into the new system, the pool owner can now manage heating remotely, while also having the flexibility to upgrade automation features in the future without the need to replace the chlorinator.
Key Takeaway
One big takeaway from this job is that chlorinator warning lights should never be ignored. A low salt warning does not always mean the pool simply needs more salt. It can indicate a range of underlying issues including a worn electrode.
Regularly checking chlorine levels and visually inspecting your equipment can help identify problems early, protecting both your pool water and your equipment.
