Common Spa Problems

Spas problems aren’t ideal when you want to relax and unwind after a long day or week. However, like any appliance or piece of equipment, they can develop problems over time. In this blog post, we will explore some of the most common spa problems and how to address them.

Water Quality Issues
One of the most common spa problems is poor water quality. If the water is cloudy, discoloured, or has an odour, it’s likely due to a build-up of bacteria and other contaminants. To ensure that your spa water stays clean and clear, you should test the water regularly and balance it as required.
Chlorine and bromine are two of the most common chemicals used to sanitise spa water. In addition to adding chemicals, it’s important to clean your spa regularly. This includes scrubbing the interior surfaces, emptying and refilling the water, and replacing the filter as needed.
Guidelines recommend changing your water every 6 months (minimum), or every 3 months if it is used more than once a week. However, this might not be necessary, so we suggest testing the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) levels, and once they reach a high point, we will suggest draining or partial draining.
Heater Problems
If your spa is not heating up properly, there could be several causes. One of the most common is a malfunctioning heater. If you notice that the water temperature is not rising even though the heater is on, it’s likely that the heating element needs to be replaced.
In some cases, the problem may be due to a faulty thermostat or pressure switch. Most cabinet spas will report an error code on the screen, which will allow for troubleshooting.
Pump Issues
The pump is an essential component of any spa, as it circulates the water and helps to maintain a consistent temperature. If the pump is not working properly, the water may not circulate correctly, which can lead to cloudy water and algae growth. In addition, a faulty pump can cause the water to be too cold or too hot.
If you notice that your spa is not circulating water properly, check the pump for any signs of damage or wear. In some cases, the problem may be due to a clogged filter, which can prevent water from flowing through the system.
By soaking your spa filter cartridges in a cartridge cleaning solution, you’ll remove grease, oils & fine debris that can clog filters. Check your lint pot (basket), which may also be blocked or require replacement.
Leaks
Leaks are another common problem with spas. Over time, constant exposure to water and chemicals can cause the seals and gaskets to wear down, leading to leaks. In addition, accidental damage can also cause leaks to occur.
If you notice that your spa is leaking, it’s important to address the problem as soon as possible. Not only can leaks lead to a loss of water and chemicals, but they can also damage the surrounding area and lead to further problems.
Electrical Issues
Spas require a significant amount of electricity to operate, which means that electrical issues can be a common problem. If you notice that the spa is not turning on or is experiencing other electrical problems, it’s important to contact a licensed electrician. Please don’t risk it when water & electricity are involved!
In some cases, the problem may be due to a faulty control panel or other electrical components, so we suggest contacting your original supplier to find the appropriate replacement.
Cover Damage
The cover is an essential component of any spa, as it helps to maintain the water temperature when heating as well as keeping debris and contaminants out of the water. However, over time, the cover can become damaged due to exposure to the elements, accidental damage, or wear and tear.
If you notice that your spa cover is damaged, it’s important to fix or replace it as soon as possible. A damaged cover can lead to water quality issues and other problems.
Jet Issues
The jets are another important component of any spa, as they provide the massage and relaxation benefits that many people enjoy. If the jets are not working properly, it can be a frustrating experience.
If your spa jets are not working properly, it’s important to check the water flow and pressure. In some cases, the problem may be due to a clogged filter or a malfunctioning pump. Damaged or broken jets can be replaced quite easily.
